How we test

The protocol behind every bench note: what the shop measures, how a check is written up, and what a note does not cover.

Every bench note on this site is a check the shop actually ran, written up the way a foreman writes it on the back of a drawing: what was measured, on which job, against which spec, and what the check does not cover.

The check comes before the result

A note opens with the protocol, not the conclusion. Before a number appears, the note says what instrument read it (a tape, a torque wrench, a dial gauge, a mill certificate) on which member, and against which line of the drawing or the code. A result without its protocol is an opinion; the bench keeps those out.

Values are given as read

Measurements are printed the way they came off the tool, in the units the tool uses, with the tolerance that applies. Where a number is a shop habit rather than a code requirement, the note says so. Where the code says it, the note names the clause.

The note says what it did not test

Every note ends with its limits. A fit-up check on one beam line does not certify the frame; a pull test on one anchor size does not cover the rest of the schedule. If a check was not run (the job did not call for it, the instrument was elsewhere, or the weather closed the lift) the note says that plainly. The bench would rather write not tested than let a reader assume it was.

When the bench is wrong

Steel moves, drawings get revised, and a measurement taken in March can be off by June. When a note no longer matches the job or a correction comes back from the field, the entry is corrected and the note keeps its date. Corrections stay visible; the shop does not quietly rewrite a check.
